6 Ways to Extend the Life of Your Paint

extend life of paint

Most homeowners will apply a new coat of interior or exterior paint to spruce up their homes every few years. The average paint job will last around 6-8 years. Every paint project is different and can vary depending on who painted your home, the surface preparation process, the quality of paint, and how the paint was applied.

Making that Paint Job Last

If you’ve recently had your house painted, or you are thinking about applying a new color, you may wonder how long your new paint will last. The longevity of a paint job depends on a variety of factors, but you can retain a freshly painted look and extend the life of a paint job by following some simple tips.

1. Proper Prep Work

Professional painters know that preparation is more time-consuming than the actual painting.  To get good results, make sure all surfaces are clean and dry.  Scrape peeling paint and sand the surface where necessary.  Remove mold and mildew.

Clear away shrubbery and tree branches when painting the exterior of your home.  They can get into the wet paint.  The better the surface is prepared, the longer lasting your paint job will be.

2. Paint at the Right Time

Temperature is a big factor in how well paint adheres to surfaces.  Exterior paint does best when the temperature is between 55 and 80 degrees.  Spring and fall are good times to paint, as are days in the summer that aren’t too hot.  Also, watch weather forecasts to make sure no rain is expected for several days.

3. Use a Good Primer

The purpose of a primer is to give paint a much better surface on which to make a tight bond.  The chances of the paint peeling or bubbling will be significantly reduced and the final finish will appear much smoother and more uniform in color.

4. Use High-Quality Paint

It’s important to select a quality paint brand for interior and exterior paint projects. The higher quality the paint is, the longer it will last and resist fading from sunlight exposure. This can save you time and money in the long term.

For exteriors, 100 percent acrylic latex paint is the best.  You’ll get great adhesion and durability with long-term retention of color.

High-quality interior paints offer the following benefits:

  • The right amount of thickness to protect your drywall so the paint job looks great for years
  • Greater levels of pigment than lower-quality paints, making walls and ceilings appear brighter and shinier
  • Facilitates the removal of scuffs, fingerprints, food particles, and other debris

5. Regular Maintenance

Once you spend time and money on repainting your home, you want to keep your freshly painted walls looking nice throughout the year. For the interior walls, cleaning and washing walls in high-traffic areas, like the kitchen and bathroom, can help your paint job last.

Pay special attention to areas behind wall switches, behind TVs, next to the bathtub or cooking surfaces. Ideally. you will want to clean these areas at least once per year with gentle cleansing. When dust and dirt accumulate on your walls, it will shorten the life of your interior wall paint. During your regular dusting routine, simply dust your walls and ceiling with the same microfiber dust cloth once every couple of months.

Keeping the exterior clean is just as important. Dirt, mildew, and other debris on your siding or trim shouldn’t be ignored. They can cause major damage to exterior paint if not removed. Opting to clean your siding and trim on an annual basis will extend the life of an exterior paint job.

6. Have Leftover Paint on Hand

Once your painting project is complete, it’s important to keep and store a small amount of the same paint for touch-ups between repaints.  This can be used to conceal stains or other minor imperfections that come from everyday living.

Store your paint in an airtight container at room temperature. Label your paint by room and date. If you bought the paint matching a paint chip, tape the card on the can. This will help you remember when and which colors you used for each area of your home, even if you have to buy more for touch-ups.

I highly recommend this company. They did an amazing job on my upcoming listing. They were also referred to me by another Realtor.

Will (owner) was a pleasure to work with and he is extremely knowledgeable in his craft, he is honest and takes the time to explain the process and what to expect.

Their set up is fantastic, they really take their time masking everything out. The paint lines are perfect and they stained a ton of natural wood, all the cabinets in the house and refinished the tile countertops.

My listing looks so beautiful 😍 they really pay attention to detail and the whole crew was super sweet.

I’ve already booked them for another upcoming listing and will continue to use this company and refer it out to others.
